I’ve always painted, but I’ve been painting in earnest since I retired from practicing law in 2010. I work exclusively in watercolor, although not in the characteristic style of watercolor. A visual disability constrains my production, but not my skill or my passion to paint.

I paint in studio from a blend of memory, photo reference, and imagination. I apply paint in fine, progressively dry layers, exploiting the texture of the paper in service of the image. I build form in a slow, unfolding process that respects the depth, dimension, and quality of light native to the subject.

The images I create, though representational, are moderated by impression and design. Place and scene are clarified, calmed, and idealized. Human figures are omitted, detail is edited, and varying elements are reduced to abstract shape or pattern. I paint the world as if everything were still life, which is how I see it.
